Ripple (XRP) is the name of a the blockchain-based payment protocol called Ripple created by American tech firm Ripple Labs, founded by Mt. Gox creator Jeb McCaleb and Chris Larsen. The name Ripple is also often incorrectly used to identify the XRP token – the native cryptocurrency of the Ripple payment protocol. While Ripple is also designed similarly to Bitcoin’s blockchain much like other competing cryptocurrencies, Ripple transactions are verified by consensus and not through mining as Bitcoin is. Ripple is often criticized for its centralized design by the cryptocurrency community. Ripple’s price hit an all-time high of $3.84 on January 4, 2018.
