Bitfinex Asks Clients to Provide Tax Information

Bitfinex, a major platform to trade such digital assets and cryptocurrencies as Bitcoin, Ethereum, EOS, Litecoin, Ripple, NEO, Monero and other assets, has sent some of its clients emails asking them to provide tax info.

Customers will have to complete self-certification forms depending on if they are individuals or entities. US residents or entities organized in the United States, as well as entities with at least one 25%+ owner who is a US resident, will have to complete a FATCA form, otherwise customers have to complete the appropriate CRS form. The information is required to be provided by May 24.

Bitfinex is registered on the British Virgin Islands. Under the laws of the country, the exchange is obliged to provide specific information to the government. Bitfinex said that it may exchange the information with tax authorities in compliance with the US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development Common Reporting Standard (CRS).

However, only some clients received the emails. Bitfinex says it sent messages only to the clients who are required to provide the data.
