Cyber security expert and founder of McAfee Antivirus Software John McAfee has made a series of surprise announcements in the past few weeks, including the printing of his own crypto-backed paper currency. However, his new announcement has him running for the office of United States President in 2020.
McAfee made the announcement via a tweet, suggesting that he is selflessly running for office to better serve the cryptocurrency community. The tweet reads:
“In spite of past refusals, I have decided to again run for POTUS in 2020. If asked again by the Libertarian party, I will run with them. If not, I will create my own party. I believe this will best serve the crypto community by providing the ultimate campaign platform for us.”
McAfee ran for president previously in 2016, but failed to win the Libertarian’s party nomination against former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson. The run in 2020 will be his second attempt. McAfee insists he would have made a bigger impact in promoting “currency independence” in 2016 if he had “been more connected with the community” during his run.
McAfee doesn’t think he will win, but believes his running for office will give him a platform to speak his mind, and through that his following could create a movement that “changes America.” McAfee said:
“Don't think that I have a chance of winning. I do not. But what truly changes America is not the president, but the process of creating one. If my following is sufficient I get to stand the world's largest stage and talk to the everyone, as I did last time, to tell the truth.”
In the meantime, McAfee is emulating former United States Presidents by appearing on paper currency. Last week McAfee announced the McAfee Redemption Unit – a crypto-backed paper currency featuring his likeness that can be redeemed for face time with the potential presidential candidate.
